Siding is a rain screen, not a seal. The job is to get water that gets behind it back out again, which comes down to the house wrap, the flashing at every window and door, and the details at corners and penetrations. Done right, you never think about it. Done wrong, you find out through the drywall.

Re-siding an existing house
When the old siding comes off you sometimes find rotted sheathing or framing, especially under windows. We look for it, photograph what we find, and price the repair before carrying on rather than covering it back up.

Common questions
My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?
It can. Federal lead-safe renovation rules cover paint-disturbing work on housing built before 1978, and a lot of the housing stock around Milwaukee predates it. Tell us the age of the house when you get in touch and we will confirm how it is handled on your job before anything starts.
What happens if there is rot under the old siding?
We look for it, photograph what we find, and price the repair before carrying on. Rot usually turns up under windows and at the bottom of walls. Covering it back up is cheaper that week and far more expensive later.
What siding materials do you install?
Vinyl, fiber cement, LP, and wood, along with the corner boards, frieze, soffit, and fascia trim that go with them. We will talk through the maintenance and cost differences when we come out.
Can siding be installed in winter?
Fiber cement and wood, generally yes. Vinyl gets brittle in the cold and is more likely to crack when it is nailed, so we watch the temperature and will tell you if a job is better held until spring.
Why does flashing matter more than the siding itself?
Because siding is a rain screen, not a seal. Water gets behind it. The house wrap and the flashing at every window, door, and penetration are what get that water back out. Those details are invisible once the siding is on, which is exactly why they get skipped.
