Most deck failures in Wisconsin come from two places: footings that were not taken deep enough, and a ledger that was not flashed and fastened properly where it meets the house. Both are invisible once the decking goes on, which is exactly why they get skipped.
What the work covers
- Footings dug below frost depth and inspected before pour
- Ledger attachment with proper flashing and structural fasteners
- Treated framing, beams, and joists sized for the span
- Decking in composite, cedar, or treated lumber
- Railings, stairs, skirting, and built-in benches
- Permit drawings and inspection coordination where the municipality requires it
Replacing an old deck
Sometimes the framing underneath is sound and only the surface and rails need replacing, which saves you a good share of the cost. Sometimes it is past saving. We will tell you which one you have got, and show you why.

Common questions
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Wisconsin?
In most Southeast Wisconsin municipalities, yes. Wisconsin's Uniform Dwelling Code sets the structural requirements for decks on one and two family homes, and your city or village issues the permit and inspects the work. We can pull the permit and meet the inspector as part of the job.
How deep do deck footings have to go?
Below the frost line. In Southeast Wisconsin that generally means about 48 inches, and your municipality will confirm the depth for your address. Footings that stop short are the single most common reason a deck heaves and racks after a few winters.
What does a deck cost?
It depends on size, height off the ground, stair runs, railing, and whether you want treated lumber, cedar, or composite. Rather than quote a range that turns out to be wrong, we come out, measure, and give you a written number with the materials listed.
Can you replace just the decking and leave the frame?
Sometimes. If the joists, beams, posts, and ledger are sound it can save you a good share of the cost. Often they are not, particularly the ledger where it meets the house. We will show you what we find and let you decide.
How long does a deck take to build?
Most residential decks take one to two weeks of on-site work once the permit is issued, with a pause for the footing inspection before the concrete goes in.
